Are you using TOPUSR (TOPUSRxx.ZIP) written by Samual H. Smith from the
Tool Shop BBS? If so this little utility will help you to modify the
City/State names in your users file.
TOPUSR will create bulletins based on the number of callers and calls made
from different City/States. If your users are like mine they have a hard time
entering the correct City/State they live in. So what you get is an assorted
list of one city spelled 20 different ways.
So what does this program do? Well it gets smarter as you use it. It will
create a file of City/State combinations from your users file as you edit them
Eventually it will scan your users file and find all the misspelled City and
States (If you entered them correctly yourself).
The first time you use it it:
1) Will create files called XCITY.DAT, where X is the first letter of the
city, in your current directory.
2) Prompt you for the ENTIRE path of your USERS file.
3) Make a backup of your USERS file (USERS.BAK)
4) Scan your users file for misspelled City/State combinations.
5) Sysop created COMMON.DAT that will automatically change certain cities
When it finds a City/State that it cannot find in the table it will prompt you
to A)dd the City/State into the table, Correct the spelling or Quit.
If you are certain that the spelling is correct then the City is not in the
table, you may select:
A - To ADD it into the table for future checks.
C - Attempt to find one that is similar to it, display all the ones that are
close to it in spelling. You then enter the number of the correct spelling
and the program will update the users record with the correct spelling.
If it cannot find one or you press return instead of entering a number
the program will prompt you for the correct spelling. After you enter the
correct spelling it will attempt to search the table again. If it cannot
find the City it will prompt you again for an A, C or Q. If you are certain
that the spelling is correct enter an A and the program will add it to the
table.
S - Skip this user and continue processing
Q - Quit will save the file to disk for the next edit run.
Once a users record has been updated with FIXCITY it will place a "α" in the
last position of the comment 1 field of the users record. Why you ask? If the
program determines that the 30th position of the comment 1 field contains the
"α" character it will automatically bypass this record. It really speeds up
the process.
If your wish to override this check run FIXCITY with a /O on the command
line. This will verify the cities with the data files.
After running this utility your bulletins from TOPUSR will not have 20 or so
misspelled Cities and will be more accurate. In the beggining you will need
to type a few Cities but after using it and building the City/State table the
job will get easier. You may get a head start by creating a City/State file
using a editor or you may edit the file BUT limit the City/State records to
a maximum of 24 characters. Thats all PCBoard allows in the user file.
The layout of the COMMON.DAT file is below:
On each line enter the city you wnat converted, followed by a colon, then the
city you wnat it converted to.
Example: CHGO, ILL:CHICAGO, IL
The file can contain 200 such entries
To help those that have used this program in the past I have written a program
to convert your old CITYST.DAT file for you. It will create a file for each
different letter in the first position of the city. All cities that began with
A will be in ACITY.DAT.
If you use this program give my BBS a call and let me know. I would like
to hear from someone that is using it to get some feedback.
Thanks, Chuck Valecek
